Kangaroo
What is the very first thing that comes to mind when you think of Australia? The Sydney Opera House? A boomerang? Or perhaps an endemic, jumpy marsupial? It actually doesn’t matter, because we all know the kangaroo is clearly associated with Australia.
The kangaroo is the largest living marsupial on Earth. Its large, strong paws enable it to travel more than 60 km/h and leap almost 10 metres in a single bound. The largest kangaroos can grow to a height of over 2 metres and weigh over 80 kilograms! In turn, a baby kangaroo, a joey, is just 3 centimetres high and remains in its mother’s pouch for around 4 months. That’s cute, isn’t it?
Males often fight over females, standing upright, punching and kicking each other like boxers in a ring. This is why a kangaroo is sometimes portrayed wearing boxing gloves.
